Privacy Policy

NiteCrew is a harm-reduction safety app designed to help you drink more responsibly and get home safely. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and your rights. We do not sell your data. We do not use your data for advertising.

2. Data We Collect
Account Information
- Email address โ to identify your account and for account recovery
- Display name โ shown within the app and to group members and friends
- Password โ stored as a secure one-way hash; we cannot read it
- Google or Apple sign-in tokens โ if you choose social sign-in; we only receive your name and email from these providers
Profile Information (optional, provided by you)
- Phone number โ used to receive SOS alerts from trusted contacts and for group identification
- Home address โ only if you enter it for the ride-home feature; stored locally on your device and shared with group members only when you explicitly consent during a ride request
- Preferred ride app (Uber or Lyft) โ stored locally on your device
Health & Safety Data
- Drinking session records (start time, end time, drink count, drink types, planned stop time) โ used to estimate Blood Alcohol Content (BAC); stored on your device
- BAC estimates โ calculated locally based on the drinks you log. These are estimates only and are not medical measurements
- Valuable items list โ items you add during a Drink Mode session (e.g. keys, wallet) are stored locally on your device only and are cleared when the session ends. This data is never transmitted to our servers
Walk Test / Motion Sensor Data
- Accelerometer and gyroscope data โ used locally on your device during Walk Test sessions to generate a sobriety gait estimate. This raw sensor data is processed on-device and is never transmitted to our servers.
- Only the computed result (an impairment estimate score) is used to display feedback in the app. No sensor recordings are stored server-side.
Location Data
- GPS location โ accessed only when you activate Drink Mode, trigger an SOS alert, add a safe zone, or enable Night Radar
- Location is shared in real time with group members during active group sessions
- Location is included in SOS alert messages sent to your trusted contacts
- Night Radar proximity data (approximate distance) is shared with opted-in friends; it is not stored permanently on our servers
- We do not store your GPS history permanently on our servers
Trusted Contacts
- Names and phone numbers of people you designate as trusted contacts โ stored on our servers so SOS alerts can be sent
- We do not access your device's address book; you manually enter contact information
Safe Zone Data
- Safe zone locations (name, coordinates, radius) โ stored on our servers to support location-based safety features
Group Session Data
- Group name, invite codes, and member list โ stored on our servers
- Your self-reported intoxication status โ visible to group members only, reset when the session ends
- Real-time location during active group sessions โ transmitted temporarily, not stored permanently
- Ride requests initiated within a group โ stored on our servers and cleared when the session ends
Friends & Social Data
- Friend list โ the list of users you have added as friends is stored server-side and associated with your account
- Friend requests โ pending incoming and outgoing friend requests are stored server-side until accepted, declined, or cancelled
- Block list โ if you block another user, that relationship is stored server-side to enforce privacy controls across all app features
- Your friends can see your display name and Night Radar status when you are actively broadcasting
Night Radar
- Night Radar is an opt-in proximity-sharing feature. When active, your approximate location is broadcast to friends who are also opted in
- Proximity broadcasts are stored temporarily on our servers and are automatically deleted after your session ends or after a short inactivity period
- You may deactivate Night Radar at any time from the app
Push Notifications
- Device push token โ if you grant notification permission, your device's Expo push token is stored server-side solely to deliver in-app alerts (game invites, friend requests, Night Radar proximity alerts)
- You may revoke notification permission at any time in your device settings or in the app's notification preferences; your token will no longer be used
- We do not share your push token with any third party beyond Expo's push delivery service (used solely to route the notification to your device)
Achievement & Game Data
- XP total, earned badges, and current title โ your achievement progress is stored server-side and associated with your account; it may be visible to your friends in the app
- Nine Lives match history โ results of completed Nine Lives games (game code, participants, outcome) are stored server-side
- The Drop sessions โ game state during an active The Drop match is stored temporarily on our servers and cleared when the match ends
- Number Bomb sessions โ game state during an active Number Bomb match is stored temporarily on our servers and cleared when the match ends
- Dice Roll sessions โ dice roll activity within group sessions is stored temporarily and cleared when the session ends
- Cocktail Builder (Blind Box Draw) โ cocktail draws are generated client-side and are not stored on our servers
Bar Hopping Data
- Bar search queries and itineraries โ when you use Bar Hopping, your location is used to search for nearby bars via Google Places. Itineraries you create are linked to your active group session and cleared when the session ends
- Bar search results are fetched server-side using a proxied Google Places API call to protect the API key. Your precise coordinates are used only to execute the query and are not stored permanently
Crash Diagnostics
- Crash reports and error logs โ collected automatically to help us identify and fix bugs
- Device type, OS version, and app version โ used for compatibility troubleshooting
- These do not contain personal health or location data
3. How We Use Your Data
We use your data solely to provide the safety and social features of the app:
- Authenticating your account and keeping it secure
- Estimating BAC based on the drinks you log (calculated locally on your device)
- Enabling SOS alerts that send your location to trusted contacts via SMS
- Displaying your status and location to group members during group sessions
- Personalizing your experience (display name, preferred settings)
- Facilitating ride-home requests via Uber or Lyft within your group
- Supporting friend discovery, friend requests, and block/unblock relationships
- Delivering Night Radar proximity alerts to opted-in friends
- Sending push notifications for game invites, friend requests, and proximity alerts (with your permission)
- Tracking and displaying your Achievements progress and game history
- Improving app stability through crash diagnostics
We never use your data for advertising, analytics sold to third parties, or any purpose beyond operating the app's safety and social features.
4. Third-Party Services
We integrate with the following third-party services:
- Google OAuth โ for "Sign in with Google" authentication. Google receives your authentication request; governed by Google's Privacy Policy
- Apple Sign In โ for "Sign in with Apple" authentication. Apple receives your authentication request; governed by Apple's Privacy Policy
- Resend โ for sending password reset emails. Only your email address is shared with this service
- Expo Push Notifications โ we use Expo's push notification service to deliver alerts. Your device push token is transmitted to Expo's servers for this purpose; governed by Expo's Privacy Policy
- Uber / Lyft โ the app opens your preferred ride-share app via a deep link when you request a ride home. No personal data is transmitted to Uber or Lyft by NiteCrew; the app handoff uses the ride-share app's own interface
We do not share your personal data with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third parties beyond what is listed above.
5. Data Sharing
We share your data only in these specific circumstances:
- With your trusted contacts โ when you or a group member triggers an SOS. Your name, location, and a Google Maps link are included in the alert
- With group members โ your display name, intoxication status, and real-time location are visible to people in your active group session
- With friends (Night Radar) โ your approximate proximity is broadcast to opted-in friends when Night Radar is active
- With friends (Achievements) โ your XP, title, and badge data may be visible to friends in the Social features
- With authentication providers โ Google or Apple, when you use social sign-in
6. Device Permissions
Location (GPS)
We request location access only when you activate Drink Mode, an SOS, or Night Radar. We do not track your location in the background at any other time.
Push Notifications
We request notification permission to deliver game invites (Nine Lives), friend request alerts, and Night Radar proximity notifications. You can deny or revoke this permission at any time without affecting core safety features.
Motion Sensors (Walk Test)
We access the accelerometer and gyroscope only during an active Walk Test session. Sensor data is processed locally on your device to compute an impairment estimate. Raw sensor recordings are never sent to our servers.
SMS
On some platforms, the app opens a pre-filled SMS for you to send SOS alerts. We do not access your SMS history, read your messages, or send SMS without your direct action.
Contacts
We do not access your device's contacts. You manually enter trusted contact names and phone numbers within the app.
7. Data Storage & Security
- Account data (email, hashed password, display name) is stored on our secure servers
- Trusted contacts, safe zones, and push tokens are stored on our servers for safety and notification functionality
- Friends list, block list, achievement progress, and game history are stored on our servers
- Session history and BAC estimates are stored locally on your device
- Walk Test sensor data is processed and discarded on-device; it is never sent to our servers
- Group session data (location, intoxication status) is stored temporarily and cleared when the session is deactivated
- All server communication uses HTTPS encryption
- Passwords are hashed using industry-standard one-way hashing algorithms
8. Data Retention
- Local data (session history, BAC estimates) remains on your device until you delete the app or clear app data
- Account data on our servers is retained while your account exists
- Group session data on our servers is cleared when the group session is deactivated
- Night Radar proximity broadcasts are deleted automatically when your session ends or after a short inactivity window
- Crash diagnostic data is retained for up to 90 days
- You can request deletion of your account and all associated server-side data at any time
9. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your account and all associated data
- Object to or restrict processing of your data
- Export your data in a portable format
10. Children's Privacy
NiteCrew is intended for users who are of legal drinking age in their country (18+ in most countries, 21+ in the United States). We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us immediately.
11. Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will notify you within the app before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
